The symposium “The Nineteenth Century — Science, Law and Education in Brazil” proposes an interdisciplinary space for reflection on the historical, political, legal and educational processes that marked the formation of the Brazilian state during the nineteenth century. Adopting a critical and integrated approach, the event seeks to discuss how scientific production, the consolidation of legal institutions, and educational models contributed to building the country’s social, economic and cultural structures.
The proposal engages with research and academic experience focused on the relationships among modernization, institutional formation, public policy and social development, especially in the fields of education, technological innovation and the democratization of knowledge. In this context, the symposium aims to bring together researchers, professors, students and professionals interested in understanding the impacts of the transformations that occurred during the Brazilian imperial period, considering topics such as the organization of education, the circulation of scientific ideas, the formation of national legal thought, civilizing projects, and the political and social disputes present during the period.
Beyond the historical perspective, the symposium also aims to promote contemporary debates on the repercussions of these structures in present-day Brazil, especially with regard to educational inequalities, access to knowledge, civic formation, and the role of public institutions in promoting social development.
