Historical archaeology, since its establishment in the Americas in the mid-twentieth century in the United States and Canada, and in the 1970s in Latin America and the Caribbean, has made substantial contributions to understanding the historical development of the viceroyalties and colonies established in the New World by the European monarchies. It has also made it possible to learn about various aspects of the republican period on the American continent. With its own methodology, this research strategy has addressed multiple topics such as processes of conquest and colonization, architecture, settlements, archaeological materials, religious establishments, trade networks, among others. Fully consolidated, historical archaeology in the Americas continues to advance steadily thanks to the significant number of studies carried out throughout our continent. The symposium “Historical Archaeology in the Americas. New Research, New Interpretations,” held within the framework of the 59th International Congress of Americanists to take place in Medellín, Colombia, in July 2027, aims to offer a space to present papers resulting from recent archaeological studies, progress on ongoing research, or final products of undergraduate and graduate theses, reflecting the current state reached by historical archaeology in the Americas. Researchers are therefore invited to submit paper proposals addressing topics of historical archaeology on the American continent. Some suggested topics include: surface surveys, excavations, material analysis (ceramics, bone, glass, metal, etc.), settlement patterns, use of natural resources, landscape modifications, haciendas and ranches, hydraulic infrastructure (dams, aqueducts, etc.), production infrastructure (mills, workshops, fulling mills, among others), dating and chronologies, documentary collections, archaeometric studies, historical cartography, historical rock-art expressions, royal roads, urban layouts, among others. However, the possibility remains open to present papers on topics related to historical archaeology.
