The symposium aims to address the implications of decolonization and the development of critical thought in health and epidemiology from the Global South, for the specific Latin American and Caribbean territory, drawing on Southern philosophies, critical social thought of the Global South, and the knowledge systems of Abya Yala.
It seeks to address and discuss the matrices of coloniality and dependency on modern Western scientific thought in Health that still predominate in the region—from the importation and reproduction of clinical biomedicine to functionalist public health and Eurocentric social medicine—as well as the type of social and human sciences we reproduce in public health, epidemiology, and health policies and systems, among others.
On the other hand, the symposium seeks to open a discussion and debate on the current geopolitics of the Pan-American health doctrine and liberal global health in our region, while simultaneously confronting the challenges of a health sovereignty strategy for Our America from the Global South.
