THE CULTURAL COLD WAR AND IBERO-AMERICA: CULTURAL RELATIONS BETWEEN THE EUROPEAN SOCIALIST COUNTRIES AND IBERO-AMERICA DURING THE COLD WAR
Starting from the historical context of the cultural Cold War, this symposium invites papers interested in analyzing the phenomenon of transatlantic cultural exchanges between the European socialist countries and Ibero-America. First, it focuses on literary production: analysis of fiction or non-fiction literature, or aspects linked to the sociology of literature (publishing policies, relationships among significant cultural actors, censorship and propaganda, mechanisms of recognition and prestige, etc.). Second, it also welcomes a broader approach encompassing other plural creative fields (visual arts, film, music, etc.) as well as approaches linked to cultural history and international relations. Contributions may consider international connections established both from and toward Ibero-America (for example, trips by Ibero-American writers to European socialist countries, or by authors from those countries to the American continent). Finally, although the main focus is on Spanish-speaking countries, the case of Brazil is also especially relevant. Regarding the list of European socialist countries, the following cases may be addressed: the GDR, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Albania, and the USSR.
