This symposium calls for the presentation of papers and the generation of dialogues on the results of multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary research and experiences on weaving practices in the Americas, considering their technical and geographic diversity, in a long-term historical perspective. In this sense, relevant contributions include research results or progress guided by archaeological, historical and ethnographic approaches, preferably comparative, on techniques such as cordage, basketry, knitted and looped fabrics, macramé and textiles, but also related techniques such as embroidery and sewing, and their relationships with artistic, artisanal and industrial dynamics. It is hoped that the presentations and dialogues between speakers and audience will foster a better understanding of how these practices have been shaped and transformed, their links with various socio-spatial dynamics, and their potential to be integrated into cultural repertoires looking toward the future. Likewise, this symposium aims to promote the creation of an international network of textile studies.
The symposium will take place in a geohistorical region, Medellín and Antioquia, where weaving has had and continues to have a singular economic and cultural significance, and should therefore be better known and valued in light of its relationships, analogies and contrasts with other geohistorical trajectories in the Americas. In parallel, the symposium will be linked to exhibitions to be held in museum spaces in Medellín, such as the Museum of the University of Antioquia, an institution that has expressed its support for this initiative.
