Studies of written culture, history of written culture, social history of written culture — different names for a single discipline whose common denominator, the analysis of the written object within specific sociocultural contexts, can be framed within the general perspective of cultural history, a field that in recent years has undergone notable development within the community of social science researchers. Within this framework, written culture, conceived as a continuous evolution from the manuscript to the printed work and from there to the virtual document, makes it possible to deepen our understanding of society and of the historical processes of the countries of the Americas. This symposium therefore welcomes case studies that are commonly classified under headings such as the history of the book, of reading, of publishing, of typography, and of the document, all of which are sheltered under the social history of written culture, a field inclined to draw on a wide variety of documentary sources.
