This symposium, Memory — Tradition and Modernity — Building New Paradigms for Latin America, proposes discussions relevant to Memory, Tradition and Modernity, with a view to offering new paradigms for a better understanding of Latin American political, economic and cultural processes. It starts from the premise that the historical reconstruction of Latin American societies requires identifying cultural continuities as producers of imaginaries that reproduce, in everyday life, the practices and symbolic representations of traditional societies, thereby deepening the study of Latin American political systems. By prioritizing the study of cultural practices and symbolic representations, we recover the imaginaries and cultural continuities of traditional societies, a distinctive foundation of Latin American culture.
The construction of new paradigms constitutes the central axis for a greater understanding of the transformations of the globalized world and reveals the complexity of Latin American societies and the hybridity involved in shaping current survival strategies in pluricultural peripheries — elements indispensable for the construction of new identities. The recovery of the memories that construct identities, together with Tradition and Modernity, constitute the fundamental elements for analyzing the differences and inequalities that characterize present-day societies.
