INTERSECTIONALITIES, CITIZENSHIPS AND RIGHTS: TRANSDISCIPLINARY DIALOGUES FROM DIFFERENTIAL APPROACHES
Within the framework of the contemporary discussions promoted by the International Congress of Americanists (ICA), this symposium proposes a space for critical and transdisciplinary reflection aimed at analyzing the multiple inequalities running through Latin American and global societies in the current context. The profound political, cultural, economic and technological transformations of recent decades have shaped new forms of exclusion, vulnerability and disputes over recognition, making it necessary to strengthen academic settings capable of engaging in dialogue from plural, critical and situated perspectives.
The symposium “Intersectionalities, Citizenships and Rights: Transdisciplinary Dialogues from Differential Approaches” seeks to bring together research, experiences and debates that contribute to understanding how contemporary citizenships are built amid tensions related to gender, ethnicity, racialization, social class, territorialities, migrations, disabilities, sexual diversities, and other categories historically crossed by power relations. In this sense, intersectionality is assumed not only as an analytical tool but also as an ethical and political commitment to understanding the complexity of human experiences and the differentiated ways in which inequalities operate.
From a human rights perspective, the symposium recognizes citizenships as dynamic processes of participation, recognition and effective exercise of rights, in permanent construction and dispute. Particularly in Latin America, contemporary democracies face challenges associated with the persistence of structural violence, the weakening of community fabrics, territorial inequalities, and the multiple forms of exclusion affecting historically marginalized populations. In this scenario, it is essential to promote academic dialogues that render visible experiences of resistance, peacebuilding, social justice and collective transformation.
The proposal calls for contributions from the social sciences, humanities, education, philosophy, health, cultural and socio-legal studies, gender studies, social work and other fields of knowledge interested in the critical analysis of contemporary sociocultural dynamics. Theoretical, methodological and applied research is expected, as well as community experiences and processes of social intervention engaging with differential approaches, participatory methodologies, and critical and decolonial epistemologies.
Suggested thematic axes include: citizenships and democracy; gender and intersectionality; memories, conflicts and peacebuilding; human rights and social justice; social movements and political participation; migrations and territorialities; violence and resistance; interculturality; critical education and emancipatory pedagogies; mental health and collective well-being; social and environmental sustainability; as well as participatory methodologies and situated research.
This symposium seeks to establish itself as an international meeting space for the exchange of knowledge, the construction of academic networks, and the generation of debates that contribute to strengthening more inclusive, democratic societies committed to human dignity, equity, and social transformation.
The symposium’s methodology will combine academic papers with a dialogue of knowledges through the presentation of research, territorial experiences, and interdisciplinary debates. Critical and collaborative participation among researchers, teachers, students and social actors will be promoted, fostering interdisciplinary exchange, comparative perspectives, and the collective construction of proposals oriented toward social justice and human rights.
