RATIONALE
The use of historical-cultural heritage, and particularly archaeological heritage, as a resource for the development of local communities has become established as a relevant field of analysis in Latin America. This symposium proposes to reflect on the dynamics through which communities neighboring heritage assets—especially those that do not formally hold custody of them—participate in processes of valorization, management and use of such resources.
Heritage, understood in both its material and immaterial dimensions, constitutes not only a legacy of the past but also a strategic asset capable of generating processes of territorial development. Within this framework, community-based tourism has emerged as an alternative to traditional models of tourism exploitation, promoting local participation, the equitable distribution of benefits and sustainability in the management of cultural resources. Archaeological heritage, in particular, poses specific challenges and opportunities, as it lies at the intersection of scientific research, technical conservation and social appropriation by contemporary communities.
This symposium seeks to address the need to move beyond exclusively technical approaches to archaeological heritage, incorporating perspectives that recognize its social dimension and its potential as a resource for development. The aim is to create a space for interdisciplinary dialogue that brings together contributions from anthropology, archaeology, cultural management, tourism and development studies, with special attention to empirical experiences in Latin American contexts.
OBJECTIVES
* Analyze the role of historical and archaeological heritage in community development processes.
* Examine models of participatory management and community-based tourism linked to cultural heritage.
* Identify good practices and challenges in the social valorization of archaeological heritage.
* Reflect on the tensions between conservation, tourism use and community appropriation.
* Promote the exchange of experiences and interdisciplinary approaches within the Latin American context.
