ARTISTIC RESONANCES IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN: POLITICS, IDENTITIES AND ARTISTIC PRACTICES FROM THE PRECOLONIAL PERIOD TO THE CONTEMPORARY
This Working Group proposes an expanded reflection on the arts in Latin America, beyond paradigms centered exclusively on decolonization. It encompasses artistic production spanning from periods prior to Portuguese and Spanish colonization to contemporary twenty-first-century practices.
The WG welcomes research on different temporalities, languages and artistic media, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, film, video, performance, installation, sound and digital art, as well as other traditional or experimental visual cultures.
Approaches on the arts of indigenous peoples, Mannerism, the Baroque and nineteenth-century academic production, Latin American modernisms, muralism, concrete and neo-concrete art, experimental practices and conceptualisms, as well as contemporary developments in the visual arts of Latin America and the Caribbean, are accepted.
Among the topics to be discussed are, among others, curatorial practices, art criticism, cultural heritage, the formation of collections and archives, private and public collecting, as well as the circulation and exhibition of Latin American and Caribbean art within and beyond its traditional circuits of production.
In dialogue with the thought of Édouard Glissant, the arts are conceived as fields of resonance capable of promoting relationships among territories, temporalities, epistemologies and modes of existence. From this perspective, the WG brings together research that problematizes art and identity in Latin America from local, global and glocal approaches.
Priority will be given to approaches that articulate questions of memory, history and orality, sensitive to the cultural, political and aesthetic specificities of the different Latin American and Caribbean countries, as well as to their convergences, tensions and transnational exchanges. The WG also encourages the submission of work that engages critically with the arts outside Latin America and the Caribbean, provided it addresses issues significant to Latin American contexts, prioritizing transnational, comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives.
The Working Group seeks to constitute a space for interdisciplinary dialogue dedicated to critical reflection on the different forms of production, circulation and reception of Latin American and Caribbean arts, considering their historical, political, media-related and epistemological complexities in the contemporary context. To this end, the WG calls for the submission of academic essays, artistic practices, art and art-activism proposals, curatorial accounts, research in progress and experimental writing proposals. Within the context of Latin America and the Caribbean, contributions discussing, among other topics, the following will be especially welcome:
