In short, the contemporary world is going through a critical moment of hegemonic transition. The most visible manifestations of this process are related to a new configuration of global powers that, in turn, considerably affect regional scenarios and blocs. Latin America and the Caribbean are no exception. On the contrary, with the recent publication of the “New National Security Strategy of the United States” (November 2025), our region will once again play a leading role in relation to the current composition of the prevailing hegemonic model of the Triad (United States, Russia, and China). Faced with the new hemispheric agenda proposed and designed by Washington, the countries of the region are compelled to review the course of their foreign policies to confront the possible scenarios that range from unilateral interventionism to multilateral cooperation. The ups and downs in the dynamics of regional integration, the crisis of representative democracy, and fluctuating economic development continue to prevent the creation of a common strategy to address the region’s main challenges, such as migration, organized crime, poverty, and environmental degradation, among others. Growing political polarization at the regional and national levels, together with the neo-extractivist economic model, are two further ingredients that weaken Latin America and the Caribbean’s current position on the present world geopolitical stage. Under these circumstances, Washington’s new Foreign Policy agenda places Latin America as a zone of dispute among the world’s great powers. US interference in electoral processes, the abduction of former Venezuelan president Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, and the usual political-diplomatic and military pressures are clear examples of regional destabilization and a direct threat to the sovereignty of our countries.
