This Thematic Symposium proposes a critical space for dialogue aimed at investigating contemporary transformations in the documentation regimes of cultural and documentary heritage in the Americas, with an emphasis on the articulation between participation, innovation, information management and knowledge management. Historically, official heritagization processes in Latin American memory institutions have been grounded in hegemonic languages and methodologies. These practices have operated under logics of exclusion that have silenced narratives and distanced vulnerable people and groups from the management of their own heritage assets. Given this panorama, the symposium is grounded in decolonial epistemologies and promotes interdisciplinary dialogues that articulate the conceptual and methodological shifts of fields such as museology, archival science, library science, history and anthropology, with the purpose of identifying participatory experiences that, through approaches of inclusion and social insertion, turn the act of documenting into a tool of political mediation, historical reparation and epistemic justice. Heritage is understood here as a living scenario in which the relationship between tradition and innovation is put under tension in the processes of negotiating meanings and memories. The central objective is to analyze how museums, archives and libraries structure active methodologies for citizen and social participation, critically problematizing the present-past-future relationship in safeguarding the memories of the Americas and debating the role of participatory documentation as a strategy of innovation in memory institutions. Innovation is conceived broadly, welcoming proposals that address its social, cultural and technological dimensions and its culture of innovation. The call seeks to attract contributions that include theoretical, methodological and empirical reflections — developed by researchers, professionals and social actors — on participation strategies in documentation applied to Global South collections. Papers are expected to engage with overcoming regional asymmetries, the construction of multivocal narratives, the exchange of knowledge, the articulation between technology and society, and the ethical reorientation of heritage and documentary practices on the American continent.
