On October 27, 2015, the United Nations voted on a resolution regarding the “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial, and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”: 191 votes in favor, 0 abstentions, 2 against: the United States and Israel.
\nThe right to food, health, education, work, and housing should never be put at risk.
\nBut the embargo imposed on Cuba has never truly been challenged. Whoever controls Cuba controls the US economy. This is no small matter given secret agreements between Cuba and the Dragon aimed at establishing electronic interception facilities on the island. In 2024, CSIS, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, began monitoring ongoing work at renowned intelligence centers near Havana, raising questions about the scope of the agreements with China. In particular, four sites already known from the Cold War for having housed Soviet nuclear weapons during the 1962 missile crisis, and strategically close to US military bases both on land and with submarines, were identified.
\nThe 1962 missile crisis reached such a level of tension that Presidents John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev necessarily had to reach a compromise, with its lights and shadows, which had important political repercussions and developed dynamics of control even against European countries by the imperialist powers of the time. Today, the geopolitical situation is even more complex and delicate. Multipolarity and the emergence on the world political stage of private forces capable of easily competing with states in directing their movements demand strategic and analytical capacity regarding the events that occur.
\nHistorically, the island has paid for its strategic position in the Caribbean, since, in addition to facing the United States, it “controls” the access of ships and goods to the Panama Canal. Controlling Cuba means controlling the Florida Strait between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. About 50% of US foreign trade passes through here and through the Yucatan Channel, not only goods, but also oil and gas extracted in the Gulf of Mexico and bound for Texas and Louisiana. But Cuba also controls access to the mouth of the Mississippi, traditionally the heart of US agriculture and industry.
