The papers that make up this symposium answer the same question from different moments and scales, tracing an arc that runs from early twentieth-century press to contemporary artificial intelligence. What connects them is not a region or a period, but the premise that no text circulates apart from its medium: the magazine, the manual, the chronicle, the biographical archive, the critical edition, or the algorithm condition literary forms, genres, and possibilities of enunciation from within.
The first moment is historical: among Ricardo Arenales’s early literary ventures, the founding of the Revista Contemporánea in 1909 stands out, fundamental to the modernization of Monterrey’s cultural and literary field, with an intellectual network that included Unamuno, Gómez Carrillo, and Alfonso Reyes. In that same environment, Rafael Garza Cantú’s cultural criticism can be read as an articulation of three traditions –Greco-Latin classicism as rational foundation, selective modernism as cosmopolitan openness, and regional romanticism as a reserve of affective memory– whose prescriptive choices respond to a demand for position within a frontier cultural field. This question of editing as a medium that constructs meaning reappears a century later with the possible critical edition of Aquí no es Miami [Here Is Not Miami] by Fernanda Melchor, centered on the story “La casa del estero” [“The House of the Estuary”].
The second moment shifts the question toward narrative poetics as a system of enunciation: in the short stories of Irma Sabina Sepúlveda, a metaliterary awareness of the art of storytelling can be observed, since literature is not literature if stripped of the space in which it is enunciated. This question reappears in the volume Mundo enfermo. Viajes infrarrealistas (2021) [Sick World. Infrarealist Journeys] by Diego Enrique Osorno, a multigeneric piece of writing whose medium of production –pandemic confinement– directly conditions its intimate tone.
A third moment shifts the question from the textual medium to the writer’s biographical medium within the cultural field: in Sergio Pitol’s trajectory through the Mexican and Spanish literary fields, strategies of consecration can be identified –proximity to prestigious figures, economic stability abroad, entry into the academic milieu– that show how the cultural field also determines the trajectories of those who produce literature, beyond any national border.
Finally, two papers shift the focus toward the technological mediation of contemporary writing as a new cultural medium. The concept of technoscientific assemblage describes a network of distributed agency in which algorithmic mediation expands the frontiers of poetic enunciation. Along the same lines, an approach to Autobiografía del algodón (2020) [Autobiography of Cotton] by Cristina Rivera Garza through computational language analysis explores how digital reading tools themselves become a medium that reconfigures literary interpretation.
The symposium thus proposes a genealogy of the cultural field running from periodical publications to the contemporary language model, showing that every medium –print, biographical, or algorithmic– is always an active, never neutral, element in the production of literary meaning.

[64
post-10746","simposio","type-simposio","status-publish","hentry","simposio_area-literatura

CULTURAL FIELD, INTERMEDIALITY AND NEW TEXTUALITIES IN MEXICO - 59º Congreso Internacional de Americanistas

<meta property="og:description" content="How do material media and cultural fields determine the form of literary writing?
