Historical archives in Latin America, from major national institutions to regional and municipal repositories, constitute the core of the region’s documentary and archival heritage and are the source of information on which interpretations of the past are based. This symposium aims to analyze the symbiotic relationship between historiographical research and the safeguarding of this archival fabric, exploring how economic, institutional and political differences, among others, generate divergences between centralized national institutions and regional and municipal archives that shape narratives about the Latin American past. It also examines how technical and budgetary gaps directly affect the development of the various archival processes applied to documentation.
\nOn one hand, National Archives centralize state memory and official bureaucracy, facing challenges of infrastructure, budgetary precarity and conservation risks. In addition, local documentary collections survive despite an even weaker institutional framework that places them “on the margin” of the State, so that regional and local memory and development are constantly exposed to imminent material loss. Added to this complex reality is the obsolescence of analog media for the historical research of the present time, a critical scenario that collides with the complex situation of long-term digital preservation and the alarming risks of loss of contemporary information in Latin America (1990-2026). This fragmentation requires that contemporary historiographical research not be a mere passive reading of sources, but a critical and situated practice that begins with the state of the institutions that preserve and nurture them, as the notable historian Lewis Hanke pointed out. Researchers must develop rigorous methodologies to identify and reconstruct the trajectories of marginalized groups, such as indigenous, Afro-descendant and rural communities, and women, whose lives and memories are scattered among the deteriorated folds of centralized official documentation and subnational records.
\nFinally, it is argued that historiographical research must take on an active commitment to defending its sources. Safeguarding and conceptually articulating national and local archives is not merely a technical task of protection and conservation, but an ethical and methodological imperative. By understanding these repositories as dynamic and interdependent cultural heritage, historiographical practice not only rescues data from oblivion, but becomes a tool of historical justice, essential for decentralizing knowledge, democratizing collective memory and identity, and rewriting the history of Latin America from its own material testimonies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"template":"","simposio_area":[66],"class_list":["post-10740","simposio","type-simposio","status-publish","hentry","simposio_area-patrimonio-cultural"],"yoast_head":"\n
