This Thematic Symposium proposes to discuss the relationships among the mobility of people, labor and citizenship in Latin America during the nineteenth century, as one of the axes of the continent’s current social inequality. Its focus falls on populations whose lives were marked by forced displacement within Latin American territories, whether promoted by public and private initiatives in search of workers, or driven by autonomous groups moving in search of work and survival. These are populations that were legally marginalized by the new grammars of citizenship that operated by erasing differences in the name of universality, and that reinforced discriminatory patterns linked to race and to the construction of citizenship in relation to foreigners. The aim is to bring together research situated at the intersection of recent studies on legal history, political history, social history and the ecology of labor, which will make it possible to simultaneously analyze legal invisibility as a technology of government used to capitalize on labor; the actions of subjects in the name of better working conditions and citizenship; and the driving factors of migration.
\nIn this sense, we call for the participation of researchers who propose to: 1) discuss the various modalities of displacement and mobility, such as projects seeking internal labor, international agreements for the arrival of foreigners, the solutions devised by the groups and individuals themselves in their search for work, solidarity networks, and the choices and working environments involved; 2) highlight the construction of citizenship within the framework of nineteenth-century Latin American constitutionalism and patterns of inequality; 3) problematize the lexicons and categories used to identify these populations, as well as those used by the populations themselves, taking into account the multiple social meanings produced in the confrontation of different forms of otherness — from freedmen, freed persons (horros), mixed-race persons (pardos), indigenous peoples, vagrants, the poor, outsiders, the eccentric, enemies, Chinese (coolies), etc.; 4) also analyze individual or collective actions and strategies of social groups that moved in the name of better working conditions, civil rights, or in search of constitutional protections and guarantees, and that acted against legal invisibility. The question of women, minors, and lack of legal capacity will receive special attention due to its particularly discriminatory character. The same applies to certain “foreigners” treated in opposition to citizens; 5) trace the trajectories of populations and individuals through the cartographic representation of the diasporas and displacements experienced, bearing in mind that the nineteenth century saw exponential growth of this process throughout the American continent.
\nThe main objective of the Symposium is to create a Network as a space for theoretical-methodological discussion to rethink, in an integrated way, citizenship, migration and race within the framework of nineteenth-century constitutionalisms.
