Throughout the history of Latin America, the Catholic Church has maintained a close and dynamic relationship with social structures, mutually influencing the cultural, political, educational, economic and moral spheres. Far from corresponding to a monolithic or ponderous vision that assumes it to be exclusively the expression of a conservative world, the Church has operated as a heterogeneous and fundamental actor in the continent’s processes of modernization, civic formation, the shaping of sociabilities, and social mobilization.<\/p>\n
Within the framework of the central theme of the 59th ICA, \u00abTradition and Innovation: The Memories of the Americas\u00bb, this symposium proposes a space for critical reflection on the role of the ecclesial institution in the region’s complex contemporary and historical transformations. The aim is to analyze how the Catholic Church has navigated the tension between preserving its traditional matrices and adopting innovative responses — whether through the thinking of its intellectuals, its pastoral transformations, or its involvement in political dynamics and social movements — in permanent dialogue with Latin American realities. Thus, the study of its institutional evolution becomes an indispensable requirement for understanding historical memory, the construction of identities, and future projects in the societies of the Americas.<\/p>\n
In this symposium we propose a broad view of history through the following thematic axes:<\/p>\n

\n– Relations between the Catholic Church, political parties and nation-state projects.
\n– Institutional responses to modernization, secularization and demands for social justice.<\/p>\n
* Axis 3: Sociabilities, education and moral formation
\n– The Catholic Church, culture and the media in the Americas.
\n– The ecclesial role in educational systems and processes of civic formation.
\n– Networks of Catholic sociability, community practices and moral formation.<\/p>\n
* Axis 4: Economy, labor and social mobilizations
\n– Economic dynamics of the Catholic Church and its insertion into capitalist labor.
\n– Church, grassroots movements and contemporary and historical social mobilizations.
\n– Participation of Catholic actors in political conflicts and the bases of armed movements.
