For a long time, the historiography of the period of bipolar confrontation focused its attention on the political, diplomatic and strategic dynamics driven by the two superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union. However, the opening of new archives and the incorporation of approaches from different disciplines have contributed to questioning this traditional perspective. Consequently, in recent decades new research agendas have emerged that, among other things, have also focused attention on the agency of Latin American actors, on their networks of exchange, and on the multiple spaces of circulation of ideas and political projects.
\nBuilding on these premises, the symposium proposes to reflect on the relations between Europe and Latin America during the decades of the Cold War, taking as its privileged axis the cases of Venezuela and Colombia between 1958 and 1989. The choice of both countries responds to the political trajectories they followed during this period, characterized by relative institutional stability and the consolidation of civilian regimes in a regional context marked by military dictatorships, revolutions and armed conflicts. This specificity allowed them to play a singular role in the regional and international arenas, making them particularly fertile spaces for analyzing forms of interlocution between Latin American and European actors.
\nThe aim, therefore, is to reflect on how political, diplomatic, intellectual, economic and social actors from both countries built channels of dialogue with European governments, parties, international organizations, political movements and networks, actively participating in defining responses to the main challenges of the international context. Likewise, this panel seeks to explore the room for maneuver of the Venezuelan and Colombian governments in the face of pressures exerted, above all, by Washington, highlighting the strategies of negotiation, cooperation and autonomy developed in different spheres.
\nIn this sense, the aim is to move beyond an exclusively bipolar reading in order to highlight the diversity of actors, interests and scales that shaped Euro-Latin American relations during the second half of the twentieth century. While the experiences of Venezuela and Colombia are to be privileged, the panel also welcomes reflections that, from a comparative or transnational perspective, incorporate other Latin American cases or examine broader regional dynamics. More specifically, the panel proposes to focus on the circulation of political ideas, development models, regional integration projects, cooperation experiences, and intellectual, cultural and academic networks, as well as on the role played by political parties, churches, international organizations and social movements in building ties between the two continents. The ultimate aim of the panel, therefore, is to offer a space for discussion that contributes to broadening the theoretical perspectives and empirical evidence on the relations between Europe and Latin America, fostering an interdisciplinary dialogue that makes it possible to understand the complexity of these processes beyond the logics of bipolar confrontation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"template":"","simposio_area":[62],"class_list":["post-10712","simposio","type-simposio","status-publish","hentry","simposio_area-historia"],"yoast_head":"\n
