But that synthesis comes at a cost repeatedly noted in the literature: two distributions can share an almost identical Gini and still have completely different shapes, with variance concentrated in different segments affecting population groups that have little in common. This has direct practical consequences, because the type of policy intervention appropriate depends precisely on where and how that dispersion is organized, not only on its magnitude.
This symposium seeks to open space for that less frequent question: not how much distributive dispersion exists in the region’s countries, but how it is structured. In which percentiles it concentrates, what variables explain it, and what all this implies for the design of economic policy.
The structural heterogeneity that runs through much of Latin America means that applying aggregate estimators, or assuming homogeneity where none exists, ends up generating estimation biases and a loss of information that proves costly when targeting public policy or allocating resources efficiently.
Methodological and empirical contributions are called for along several lines of work, including:
Indicators, decomposition methods, or econometric techniques for characterizing the distributive structure of income or wealth, including multidimensional poverty, social mobility (intra- and intergenerational), and socioeconomic stratification models.
Empirical applications using census data, household surveys, or other statistical sources that allow for estimating the distribution of income or wealth at the national or subnational level.
Analysis of territorial heterogeneity and its economic determinants, whether through regional fixed effects or stratified estimations.
Public policy implications derived from recognizing that the optimal intervention depends on the distributive structure specific to each territory and not only on its aggregate mean or variance.
Contributions engaging with the already well-established econometric literature in this field, as well as those using any statistically robust data source for the purpose of the work, are welcome.
This symposium is intended for economists and specialists in quantitative methods from different countries in the region who are working on developing better estimation instruments, or on their application to concrete cases. The idea is that the joint discussion will help produce useful evidence for designing more cost-effective targeting policies.

[57
post-10590","simposio","type-simposio","status-publish","hentry","simposio_area-estudios-economicos

QUANTITATIVE APPROACHES FOR DISTRIBUTIVE CHARACTERIZATION IN LATIN AMERICA - 59º Congreso Internacional de Americanistas

<meta property="og:description" content="The Gini coefficient remains by far the most widely used indicator for summarizing the dispersion of an income or wealth distribution in a single number.
