This symposium calls for researchers interested in discussing the ways in which children’s rights are lived, interpreted, negotiated, enacted and imagined in Latin American everyday life, from diverse perspectives and in dialogue with different theoretical, methodological and disciplinary approaches.<\/p>\n
In recent decades, children’s rights have gained increasing centrality in public debates, state policies, educational institutions, family dynamics and social mobilizations in Latin America (Vergara del Solar, Llobet & Nascimento, 2021). Rather than understanding these rights as fixed principles or norms simply implemented from specialized institutional frameworks, the symposium proposes to approach them as lived social practices and fields of dispute crossed by interpretations, translations and struggles over the legitimate production of meaning (Hanson & Nieuwenhuys, 2012; Liebel, 2012). From this perspective, rights do not appear as univocal categories, but as ambiguous, relational and contingent statements, whose meanings are permanently produced and contested in different spaces of social life (Farini & Scollan, 2024; Llobet et al., 2025).<\/p>\n
The symposium calls for research oriented toward the everyday and relational experiences of children and those who interact with them, examining how rights are interpreted, appropriated, translated, negotiated or contested in spaces such as families, schools, neighborhoods, digital environments, public institutions and social movements. It is especially interested in understanding how different actors produce situated meanings around rights, articulating them with affects, moralities, social bonds and everyday life experiences, as well as with forms of intergenerational action in defense of the rights of children and adolescents (Rizzini, 2024). From this perspective, everyday life appears not as a private or apolitical space, but as a terrain where relations of authority, legitimacy, regulation, care, autonomy and participation are configured.<\/p>\n
From critical perspectives on children’s rights, the symposium also invites examination of the ambivalences of rights discourses and practices, considering that these can operate both as tools of democratization and emancipation, and as means mobilized in the service of new forms of regulation, control and the reproduction of social inequalities (Reynaert et al., 2012; Anastas\u00eda, 2015; Villalta, 2021; Llobet et al., 2025). It is also interested in exploring how the languages of rights are appropriated, negotiated and resignified in diverse social and cultural contexts, as well as the complex ways in which they circulate and are contested in everyday life (Bhabha, 1994; Engle Merry, 2006; Twum-Danso Imoh, 2024).<\/p>\n
Contributions are invited from anthropology, sociology, history, education, legal studies, childhood studies and other related fields. Papers linked, among other topics, to: children’s civil and political rights; children’s participation and citizenship; intergenerational relationships; childhood and inequality; gender and sexualities; school experiences; violence and protection; children and digital technologies; social mobilizations; indigenous peoples; migration; public policies; and methodologies for research with children will be received.<\/p>\n
The aim is to create a space for dialogue on the contemporary ways of living, contesting and imagining childhood and rights in Latin America, promoting exchanges among empirical research, theoretical debates and methodological experiences developed from different contexts and disciplinary traditions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"template":"","simposio_area":[52],"class_list":["post-10475","simposio","type-simposio","status-publish","hentry","simposio_area-derecho-y-derechos-humanos"],"yoast_head":"\n
