WAR ECOLOGY, EXTRACTIVISM AND AUTHORITARIANISMS

The forms of violence that (re)appear or are transformed in post-peace-agreement periods emerge as a social expression of a militarism that has become entrenched over time and remains latent in everyday interactions, or they may represent a strategic reconfiguration or recycling of armed structures that resume methods of social control and repertoires of war in order to continue capturing revenue from criminal activities. Under this scenario, organized crime—which also manages to regroup the successor organizations of pre-peace armed structures—gradually consolidates a criminal governance that often blurs the boundaries between the formal and the criminal. By regulating productive activities through gray economies (livestock farming, mining, trade, and even agribusiness), these groups operate as de facto authorities. Their power is not only military but societal, legitimizing itself as a regulator of everyday life in places where state presence is fragmentary and/or where institutional corruption allows them to operate.
This dominance materializes in geostrategies of territorial control confined to logistical arteries—often inherited from the conflict—vital to the circuit of criminal revenue (drug trafficking, illegal mining, human trafficking). Control of these corridors guarantees the mobility of assets and troops, ensuring a permanent operational advantage over the State.
The violence of post-peace-agreement eras also emerges from the tensions woven between territorial peace—which seeks to democratize territory and protect the commons—and war ecologies—which view the natural environment as spoils based on the extension of commodification to all resources. This struggle turns territory into a battlefield where violence once again protects accumulated privileges over economic, social, cultural and environmental rights (ESCER) and jeopardizes the transition toward peace without securing the conditions for genuine reconciliation.
By keeping mechanisms of accumulation by dispossession alive, the advent of the neoliberal order that marked post-peace-agreement periods also favored a resurgence of extractivism, which acts as an axis of systemic aggression and functions not only as an economic model but as a “boiler” of tensions that reorders territory for global capital, displacing local autonomies and transforming vital ecosystems into sacrifice zones.
This competition among irregular and regular forces—which sometimes drift toward crime—and even foreign military actors, translates into the adoption of authoritarian forms of governance imposed through the (re)militarization of society (sometimes even more extensive than in wartime) or states of exception. Justified by those who exercise it as necessary, this authoritarian slippage produces new forms of violence tolerated by those who, out of desperation and pragmatism, accept social control and remain silent in exchange for temporary security measures in public spaces, recreational and commercial activities. This apparent harmony and peace override the rule of law and even dispense with the basic norms of democratic functioning in society.

[51
post-10456","simposio","type-simposio","status-publish","hentry","simposio_area-cultura-de-paz-y-conflicto

THE VIOLENCE OF POST-PEACE-AGREEMENT ERAS: ORGANIZED CRIME, GEOSTRATEGIC CONTROL, TERRITORIAL PEACE VS.
