The contemporary world is caught in multiple tensions, one of them being who uses information and how. This raises discussions about the role of journalism, understood as the guarantor of truthful information that enables citizens to participate in building society and democracy.<\/p>\n
A few years ago, the phenomenon of disinformation emerged, as information ceased to be the exclusive domain of news media. With the development of the internet and increasingly user-friendly devices and applications, any citizen can record and send content that reaches millions of people within seconds. There is not always malicious intent in sending it, but the lack of verification processes, source cross-checking and context can distort the perception of an issue for those who consume the content, who in most cases assume that something is true if it is published online or was shared by a leader or someone familiar.<\/p>\n
There are also powerful companies dedicated to distorting the information that reaches citizens, with the intention of influencing their emotions and decisions. This is used especially in political campaigns, smear strategies, and by denialist groups.<\/p>\n
To this must be added the impact that various technologies, including artificial intelligence, have on journalism. On one hand, there are warnings about the dangers involved in its inappropriate use in content creation, information requests and fact-checking. On the other hand, there is its accelerated adoption by journalists in preparing their reports.<\/p>\n
For critics, AI undermines the analytical and narrative capacity of information professionals and could even replace them in functions related to data gathering, source cross-checking, writing and editing. Defenders of AI use, for their part, highlight the tool’s speed in processing data and drafting text, which facilitates the creation of accessible, easy-to-digest content for users increasingly distant from traditional formats. They also argue that the role of the journalist will not disappear but will transform, as it has with the arrival of every new technology.<\/p>\n
Accordingly, this symposium raises questions such as: who controls and will control information? Who determines what is published and what is not? How can AI be integrated into journalism? How should its use in journalism be regulated? How are the tensions between algorithms, survival and responsibility experienced from journalism and communication? Is journalism still relevant in an infoxicated society? Where does access to information as a public good stand? How has journalism been transformed by technological change?<\/p>\n
