Often subsumed within the broader field of Latin American art, the region’s distinct artistic histories have been left understudied and underrepresented in canonical surveys, museum collections, and university curricula.

Before major international museums began paying sustained attention to Central American art, pioneering institutions within Central America endeavored to develop the region’s contemporary art ecosystem. TEOR|éTICA in Costa Rica, founded by Virginia Pérez-Ratton in 1999, has been especially influential as a hub for exhibitions, publications, archives, research, and regional dialogue, helping to connect artists, curators, and scholars across the isthmus and to articulate a critical discourse grounded in Central American realities. Similarly, the Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo (MADC), MAC Panamá, and Mujeres en las Artes (MUA) in Tegucigalpa played a foundational role by providing opportunities for contemporary artists from across the region through exhibitions, education, and collection-building. Together with the Red de Arte de Centroamérica (RACA), which has fostered cross-border collaboration, research, and professional networks, these organizations have created the infrastructure necessary for a regional art field to flourish. While Central American artists were long represented also through regional events such as the Central American Biennial and the MESóTICA and Temas Centrales exhibition series at MADC, their presence in major museum collections, art-history curricula, and international exhibitions outside the region remained limited in all but a few cases.

The position of Central American art has shifted internationally from near invisibility to grow into a field that is now receiving sustained institutional, scholarly, and market attention. Museums and research institutes have increasingly incorporated Central American artists into exhibitions, collections, research agendas, and public programming. For example, the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) has featured artists from across Latin America, including from Central America, in their collections and exhibitions since the 1990s. The Getty Research Institute’s Latin American and Latinx Art Initiative founded in 2022 has focused on Central America to address the lack of research, archival access, and scholarly infrastructure devoted to the region. The creation in 2025 of the Cáder Institute for Central American Art (ICAC) at Museo Reina Sofía, dedicated to research, collections, fellowships, publications, and exhibitions related to Central American art and its diasporas. El Chopo in Mexico City also has been shifting their focus to include Central America art. In US universities, there has been an explicit institutional turn toward Central America. California State University, Northridge, launched Central American Studies in 2000. More recently, UCLA incorporated Central America into the Department of César E. Chávez Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies. Both represent landmark moments in the institutionalization of this field in U.S. higher education.

These developments present a significant shift toward increasing visibility and recognition for Central American art. This symposium explores the historiography of these developments focusing on the emergence of Central American art in academia, museums, research institutes, and the art market.

[47
post-10393","simposio","type-simposio","status-publish","hentry","simposio_area-arte-y-estetica

ART OF CENTRAL AMERICA - 59º Congreso Internacional de Americanistas

<meta property="og:description" content="For much of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, Central American art remained largely marginalized within the discipline of art history and the art market.
