Earthen constructions constitute one of the most widespread manifestations of human landscape transformation and, at the same time, one of the archaeological categories whose study has been most renewed in recent decades thanks to the development of remote sensing technologies, spatial analysis and geoarchaeology. From the funerary and residential mounds of the South American lowlands, raised agricultural fields and pre-Hispanic hydraulic systems, to European tells, African agricultural landscapes and other monumental forms of terrain modification, these architectures evidence complex processes of engineering, social organization, environmental adaptation and territorial construction.<\/p>\n
The aim of this symposium is to bring together comparative research on earthen architectures (earthworks) from the Americas, Africa and Europe, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue among archaeologists, geoarchaeologists, geographers, remote sensing specialists, paleoecologists and heritage managers. The aim is to discuss both the technological and methodological aspects associated with the study of these structures and their social, economic, political and symbolic implications, while also incorporating perspectives that analyze their present-day relevance as cultural landscapes.<\/p>\n
In this sense, the symposium also invites contributions addressing the conservation, protection and management of the heritage associated with these architectures, as well as the study of continuities and discontinuities in their uses, occupations and forms of habitation over time. Special attention will be given to research employing innovative methodologies such as LiDAR, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), satellite imagery, drones, geographic information systems (GIS), artificial intelligence applied to archaeological survey and geoarchaeological techniques.
\nBeyond comparing specific regions, the purpose is to build an international discussion on the diverse ways in which different societies transformed the landscape through large-scale earthmoving, as well as on the contributions that new analytical tools and contemporary perspectives offer for understanding the history, conservation and resignification of these built landscapes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"template":"","simposio_area":[46],"class_list":["post-10340","simposio","type-simposio","status-publish","hentry","simposio_area-arqueologia"],"yoast_head":"\n
