This symposium aims to foster a space for exchange and discussion around the diverse ways of remembering ancestors in different regions of Latin America. From an interdisciplinary perspective, it seeks to reflect on the plurality of practices and representations that the peoples of South America have built in relation to death and the memory of their deceased.<\/p>\n
For more than four centuries, the indigenous peoples of Latin America have reconfigured their ways of commemorating the dead as a result of complex historical processes of transformation and cultural interaction. Throughout the continent, numerous communities receive and symbolically coexist with the souls of their ancestors through rituals, offerings, food, music and other expressions that strengthen the bonds between the world of the living and that of the dead. The commemoration of the deceased constitutes one of the most widespread ritual practices across the continent. Although in many places it is celebrated on November 2nd, each people has developed particular ways of understanding and experiencing the return of ancestors, imbuing this date with its own meanings that reflect their conceptions of death, memory, kinship and the relationship with communal life. The way ancestors are remembered involves aspects linked to bonds of reciprocity deeply rooted in the social relations of indigenous groups, which are found not only in rural settings but are also resignified in urban contexts through mobility and migration.<\/p>\n
This symposium therefore aims to foster the exchange of diverse perspectives on the ways of remembering ancestors throughout the American continent. It also aims to examine the impact of human mobilities and the circulation of objects during funerary rituals. In this way, it seeks to reflect on ritual practices and their adaptation in contexts of globalization, evidencing both processes of cultural continuity and resistance as well as the emergence of new forms of relationship with ancestors and collective memory.<\/p>\n
We also add debates around the ways in which the restitution of bodies subjected to dispossession or forced removal, carried out in the context of scientific research or by amateurs\/collectors, is considered. We are interested in bringing together works that discuss the impact that restitutions have within communities, the debate about how restitutions should be carried out, considering who performs the rituals and how, in addition to the context of production of practices and meanings surrounding restitutions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"template":"","simposio_area":[44],"class_list":["post-10316","simposio","type-simposio","status-publish","hentry","simposio_area-antropologia-y-antropologia-social"],"yoast_head":"\n
