“Great miracle, O Asclepius, is man.” This famous statement, attributed to Hermes Trismegistus and immortalized by Giovanni Pico della Mirandola in his Oration on the Dignity of Man (1486), today seems shot through with radical questions. Where does the human being currently stand? Are we still the measure of all things? For centuries we have inhabited the comfortable narrative of a species situated at the center of the world, separate from nature, above the animals, assisted by the gods and, more recently, transformed into the sovereign creator of machines. This vast web of philosophical, theological, scientific and literary discourses has not only shaped our self-understanding but also our ways of life and our institutions. This symposium proposes a critical inquiry into the historical and conceptual conditions that made possible the figure of the “human being” as an exceptional entity. Particular attention will be paid to the anthropotechnical dimension of our species: the set of practices, forms of knowledge and devices through which the human being produces, disciplines and reinvents itself. In a world traversed by ecological, technoscientific and cultural transformations of unprecedented scope, thinking about “the human” today requires accepting that we perhaps no longer know clearly what that name designates. Genetic engineering, artificial intelligence and new forms of hybridization between organisms, data and machines compel us to reconsider the traditional boundaries between nature and technology, body and artifice, intelligence and calculation, life and programming.
